M103 is a nice open cluster located next to one of the bright stars in Cassiopeia. Quite colorful. The scale is quite large here, and you can follow the line from the bright star to M103 to reach NGC 663, another open cluster.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M103.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-324\" alt=\"M103\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M103-1024x690.jpg\" width=\"701\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M103-1024x690.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M103-300x202.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M103.jpg 1549w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>M52 is another nice cluster, pretty dense. Just down and left of the cluster is the Bubble nebula.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M52.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-294\" alt=\"M52\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M52-1024x681.jpg\" width=\"703\" height=\"475\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next is the first nebula of the evening, M76, the Little Dumbell (or the Corkscrew). It&#8217;s the tiny object just below the bright star in the center:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M76.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-312\" alt=\"M76\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M76-1024x679.jpg\" width=\"703\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M76-1024x679.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M76-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M76.jpg 1709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 703px) 100vw, 703px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>M34 follows, an open cluster in Perseus:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M34.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-281\" alt=\"M34\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M34-1024x710.jpg\" width=\"706\" height=\"490\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M34-1024x710.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M34-300x208.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M34.jpg 1619w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>M45, the Pleiades follows, one of the most widely known Messier objects. Visible here is some of the reflection nebula that overlays this cluster:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M45.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-288\" alt=\"M45\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M45-1024x677.jpg\" width=\"704\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M45-1024x677.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M45-300x198.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M45.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 704px) 100vw, 704px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>M79 is next, the first globular cluster of the evening in Lepus:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M79.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-315\" alt=\"M79\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M79-1024x680.jpg\" width=\"705\" height=\"466\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then you get to M42 and M43. M42, the Orion Nebula, is another very widely recognized object. I framed this shot to get the Flame Nebula and the Horsehead nebula, just off the belt of Orion. Also visible are the Running Man Nebula and a satellite trail. M42 is the bright part of the nebula and M43 is the small nebula on top.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M4243.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-330\" alt=\"M4243\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M4243-1024x591.jpg\" width=\"705\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M4243-1024x591.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M4243-300x173.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M4243.jpg 1907w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 705px) 100vw, 705px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>M78 comes next. This is a reflection nebula near Orion&#8217;s midsection. I didn&#8217;t plan this, but I caught the Flame and Horsehead here, as well as Barnard&#8217;s loop (the very long red nebula at the bottom):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M78.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-314\" alt=\"Picture saved with settings embedded.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M78-1024x729.jpg\" width=\"706\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M78-1024x729.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M78-300x213.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M78.jpg 1380w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next is the M1, the Crab Nebula, a supernova remnant that erupted in the 11th century:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-254\" alt=\"M1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M1-1024x677.jpg\" width=\"705\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M1-1024x677.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M1-300x198.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M1.jpg 1137w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 705px) 100vw, 705px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>M35 is an open cluster in Gemini. Next to it is a smaller open cluster:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M35.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-282\" alt=\"M35\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M35-1024x679.jpg\" width=\"705\" height=\"466\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M35-1024x679.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M35-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 705px) 100vw, 705px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>M37 is a very dense open cluster in Auriga:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M37.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-283\" alt=\"M37\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M37-1024x665.jpg\" width=\"702\" height=\"455\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M37-1024x665.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M37-300x194.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>M36 and M38 are two nearby clusters in Auriga. Also visible here (bottom left) is the Flaming Star nebula:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M3638.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-329\" alt=\"M3638\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M3638-1024x746.jpg\" width=\"705\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M3638-1024x746.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M3638-300x218.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.joebohanon.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/M3638.jpg 1388w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 705px) 100vw, 705px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next in M41.
